CHAPTER 5

There’s a black SUV standing in front of my building when I go downstairs. It’s pretty early in the morning for most people to be awake, but Patricia wanted me to open the store early today. I’m a little concerned with this new development. A man gets out of the car wearing a suit. When he stretches out a hand to greet me he places the other hand over his hip, and I know it’s to show me the concealed weapon there.

“Could you do me a favor and get in the car?” he says, holding the door open for me. “I’m on a schedule and I don’t want to use this thing.”

When I hesitate he speaks again. “Please sir,” he says. “I’m not going to ask you again.”

I get in the car, all the while wondering what the hell is going on. “Please don’t be alarmed,” the man says when he gets in the backseat right next to me and the SUV drives off. “We’re not here to hurt you.”

“Where are you taking me?”

“You’ll find out soon enough.”
